Ballyhornan Family Centre state-of-the-art 3G pitch

A £1.2 million investment in new sporting and leisure facilities at Ballyhornan Family Centre has resulted in the creation of a fully equipped 3G pitch, with changing rooms, floodlights, fencing, and an adjacent car park. These enhancements will significantly benefit the local community, offering improved access to sports and leisure activities for all ages.

The Executive Office’s Social Investment Fund provided the lion’s share of the funding, amounting to approximately £1.1 million. Newry, Mourne and Down District Council contributed an additional £125,000, demonstrating the collaborative spirit that has gone into this project.

These new facilities will cater to the diverse needs of the Ballyhornan community and surrounding areas, providing a safe, structured, and modern environment for sports enthusiasts of all levels. Additionally, they will play a vital role in promoting physical activity and overall well-being among residents.

Councillor Cathy Mason, Chairperson of Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the project, stating, “One of our key objectives is to enhance the health and well-being of our community and bridge health disparities. This new facility will serve as a thriving hub, offering modern sporting facilities and positively impacting the health and well-being of individuals of all ages. This fantastic development exemplifies the successful partnership between statutory and voluntary organizations, and its transformative impact on our community will be immense.”

Patricia Curran, Chairperson of Ballyhornan Family Centre, echoed this sentiment, expressing her delight at the completion of this long-awaited project. She commended the support of various stakeholders, including statutory bodies, the local council, and individuals like Liam McLernon, local Councillor Dermot Curran, and Naomi Bailie. She also highlighted the crucial role played by Celtic Bhoys Football Club in bringing this project to fruition.
